Familiar Faces

This weekend our good friends Barbara and Alex Taylor came for a visit. It was so nice to see familiar southern faces. The kids had so much fun playing with Alex and I had a great time chatting and catching up with Barbara. Here is a review of our busy weekend.

Saturday Morning:

Alex stayed with us while Barbara went to a baby shower for her friend Steph near here. We took the kids swimming at the hotel the Taylors' were staying at. True to Minnesota weather, it was chilly and cloudy on the day we had planned to take the kiddos to the "beach".

Saturday Evening:

After the kids got up from their naps, we took them and Barbara to the Mall of America. The kids were able to ride some of the rides at Nickelodeon Universe and we ate supper at the Rainforest Cafe. Apparently this has now become Maddie's "most favorite" place to eat. Wade took Sam home at bed time and the girls stayed out riding rides and playing until after 10 pm. It was so much fun!!!

Sunday Morning:

Before we had to say goodbye to our friends from home, we took them to the Minnesota Children's Museum. The kids and I had been there before, but it was Wade's first time. Everyone had a great time. It is a really neat hands-on museum. I think Maddie and Alex's favorite was the "Once Upon A Time" room. Here you can dress up as princess and play in fairy tales. They both tried on Cinderella's glass slipper (a perfect fit for both) and dressed up as princesses. Of course, the "Neighborhood" room is really neat as well. Here you can cook in a restaurant, drive a bus, and the hands down favorite.....sing and dance on stage. Watch out Grammy's here comes Maddie, Sam and Alex....the next BIG HIT!!!

P.S. That is face paint on Sam's face. You can "paint" your own face at the museum. A hit for the kids who have control of crayons a disaster for a two year old who thinks he can.

We were so sad to see our friends leave. Today (Monday) the kids and I have had Taylor withdrawal. We want to thank Barbara and Alex for making the trek here and thank Scott for keeping the boys so they could come. It was a great much needed break from the hum drum of live in Minnesota. We would love to have other guests.....just let us know when to pick you up from the airport!!!

Since we don't want to leave this post on a sad note, we are leaving it with a film of Sam dancing. Note the he gets his abilities from his Daddy!!

Lazy Morning....

Today we have had a lazy morning in preparation for Barbara and Alex Taylor's visit. Maddie knows that Ms. Barbara is coming. However, she hasn't the slightest clue that her best buddy Alex is also coming. I can't wait to see the reaction from Maddie. Here are some pictures from our lazy morning. There is also a video. The video is fairly dark and more for the grandparents than anything. Nothing really exciting on it, just the kids talking and Maddie singing. We hope everyone in NC and GA have a great weekend. We miss you all!!!

What to do when......

The oven still isn't fixed.....

Many of you have heard our saga about the oven. When you are a family of four, the oven plays a very important role in day to day life. Simple things like heating a frozen pizza (Wade and my favorite Sunday night cuisine) can't be done. Of course when the stove top doesn't work either, as ours didn't, you literally can't even boil water. Our lives have had lots of sandwiches in them lately. Finally yesterday the GE man came to "fix" the oven. Apparently lighting hit the building a couple of weeks ago and "fried the motherboard" in the oven. Yes, I am still speaking of my oven and not a computer. Apparently ovens come really high tech in MN. I can guarantee that my gas oven in GA didn't have a motherboard, father board, or any other kind of board on it. The parts were ordered.....another week. And then it was to be fixed yesterday. I was going to broil pork in BBQ sauce with fresh corn on the cob and a baked potato for dinner as a celebration to have the oven back "on board" so to speak. It took almost 2 hours to broil thawed pork. I am not talking honking huge slabs of pork either, just the thin cutlet kind. 2 hours is WAY too long when you have small kids. Needless to say, the kids couldn't wait on the pork so they had trusty ol' dino chicken nuggets with their baked potato. Wade and I held out and waited until the pork was done. I must say, 2 hours is TOO LONG to wait for adults as well!!! So, it is back to jumping through the corporate apartment hoops to let the appropriate people know that the oven still isn't working properly.....and then waiting for the appropriate people to decide on the appropriate action to take with the oven (I for one wouldn't mind dropping it out our 5th floor window and getting a new less sophisticated one....then again I am from the south!!)

Minnesota doesn't have consignment sales??

Barbara was telling me that registration for the "Mother of all consignment sales" is on Friday. My heart dropped a little. I am at a loss for how to find clothes for my kids. Since having children, I have bought consigned and sold at consignment sales. Therefore, I have always broken even or made money on clothes each season. It does take some skill and you have to love the thrill of the hunt to stay in line for 2-3 hours at a time to check out. This is done sometimes with or without children. So, I find myself far away from the consignment sales that have clothed my children, rather nicely I might add, for four years. I now scoff at "sales" in stores. "You expect me to pay $4 for a shirt" I think to myself. My mind always goes back to the consignment sales, "I could get that shirt for $2 or less." Today the kids and I went shopping for next summer's clothes. Yes, all the summer stuff is on clearance (not clearance enough for me) here and fall stuff comes out on July 20th. "What", I thought...."July 20th...In GA we still have at least 3 more months of warm weather from July 20th". Oh well. Not so much here, I guess. Anyway, I was able to find Sam some shirts at the Children's Place and Gymboree that were reasonably reduced....again, not consignment sale prices....but more than 60% off. Maddie, seems to be another story. Then again, I am really picky about her clothes. I want her to still look like a little girl. So, my dear Georgia friends...think of me when you are "tagging and hanging" and when you are waiting in lines. I will really miss going "consigning" with you this year!! Barbara, I guess the "shopping fearsome fivesome" will be reduced this year :(

Your son thinks he is a "Rescue Hero"

Sam has recently really gotten into the Fisher Price Rescue Heroes (that are no longer made and you have to find on eBay..yeah for Mommy) and Planet Heroes (thankfully some of these are still carried in stores). I have found him some of the Rescue Heroes at random consignment sales last year and saved them up. Then, I give them to him all along as surprises. It as been a blessing since we moved to MN. Anyway, Sam thinks he is a "Re-q he-o" and that he is going to "save word" (Rescue Hero....saving the world). He runs around saying "Me's He-O". Of course in his mind, saving the world equates to bopping Sissy on the head with something or running up and down the hallway yelling (no wonder the neighbors love us, huh?). But he enjoys it all the same. Wade keeps telling me that this is what little boys are suppose to do. I am used to little girls playing dress up and dolls, not running around saving the world. So for now, I just keep Maddie out of harms way and let him save the world all he wants to....I guess someone needs too!

Monday Night Swimming...

Back to the pool....

Since we had warm weather this weekend, we spent the day Saturday at the water park. The kids are really doing well in the water. Maddie has started swimming without her vest on. We hope to film her and post it soon.

Face Lift....

If you happened upon our blog this weekend you noticed that it several different face lifts. That is due the fact that I, Christa Sheek, am starting to get Internet savvy. I know, I know, hold on to your hats...but it is true!!! I have figured out how to edit the HTML and add new layouts that aren't provided by blogger, slide shows, etc. If you progger (what I call a pro-blogger) I am sure this is baby stuff to you. However, if you are a newogger (what I call someone new to blogging) it is very exciting to figure stuff out.

So, this weekend I tried out several different layouts. Finding a perfect layout is tough. Obviously we don't need one that has retro women on it or that has a pregnancy calender. We also don't need the kind that have different types of cars, trucks and motorcycles. We aren't Harley fans. I like sports enough, but not enough to have my blog covered in them. Wade nixed a few because they were "too colorful". In my view, bright colors are happy.....and we like happy around here. I found the current layout to be happy without overdoing it. Also, I thought the colors in the blog spot were easy to read. I can't promise, however, that this will be the layout next time you drop in for a visit. I think I will enjoy changing things up ever so often!!

A trip to Como Park Zoo

One of the neat things (okay so the only I have found so far) about the Twin Cities....all the parks around. One of the parks is Como Park Zoo in downtown St. Paul. Today, we went with our new friends Kim, Collin, and Shawn. The kids had a great time and it was so nice to converse with an adult during the day. Here are some picture for you to enjoy!!!

Staring Lake Park

Yesterday, it was a nice day here...not swimming pool nice, but park nice. After I picked Maddie up from Summer Camp (where apparently they had a "willy willy cool treasure hunt") we went to Staring Lake Park for a picnic and play time. It was a really neat play area and the kids had a great time. To get down to the play area you could either go down this long tube slide or take the stairs. By unanimous vote it was down the slide!!

I get knocked down......

But I get up again. You're never gonna keep me down. I get knocked down. But I get up again. You're never gonna keep me down.

You may recognize the lyrics from the song "Tubthumping" by the group Chumbawamba. If I could figure out how to make it play on this blog, I would. Granted there are a few lyrics in the song that I don't endorse or want my children to listen too, but the chorus I find I have been living. (Please don't think I am a Chumbawamba fan. I have no idea if they have even written another song. This one was popular when I was in college. Another point in my life that it felt like I kept "getting knocked down")

It seems for the past two 1/2 weeks I have been getting knocked down at every turn. Everything from the house in GA not selling (as of yet, it is still on the market..and a really great lovely family home if you are interested!!!..had to put a plug in), the oven not working, the vacuum cleaner and I getting into a fight, the various other adventures you have read about, etc. etc.

Recently it wasn't I that was knocked down, but my wallet was knocked out while I was carrying my son kicking and screaming out of a store. It wasn't until we arrived at Target, which was our next stop, that I realized it was gone. AAAAHHHHHH!!!!! I drove back to the first store. After talking the clerk, nope it wasn't there. Don't worry though, she said, "Ooo (said in the Minnesota long drawn out nasally way) your accent is really sweet". (What do these people think an accent like mine means that it would be sweet? Do they think I come from a huge plantation with white pillars on my porch and the theme from "Gone with the Wind" playing in the background??? Seriously people it is more like the Beverly Hillbillies and not the part when they move to Beverly Hills. - sorry for the side street I just took). So, it was back to check the parking lot and drive slowly back to Target. There at the customer service I left my name, number, and description of my wallet (hello, how many wallets in MN will contain a GA driver's license?). The customer service lady at Target was really nice. Couldn't understand that I was saying I had L-O-S-T my W-A-L-L-E-T. Then again, not real sure how much English she understood at all. Isn't that great, placing someone in customer service that is shaky on their English? Anyhoo, after dragging the kids from place to place, the kids and I got back in the car to figure out Plan B. I told the kids that what we needed was a miracle. So, we prayed. If anyone can find a wallet, it's God. He is the One that sees all, right? Seriously after we prayed, Wade received a phone call from a local McDonald's (keep in mind that I hadn't been to McD's). They had my wallet. The kids and I went to retrieve it. Apparently a lady found it in the parking lot of the first store we were at and took it to the nearest large store, good ol' Micky D's. I had to identify it to prove it was mine. Again, I used the whole, it has a GA driver's license in it. That seemed to work. Guess that don't have many of us "Georgia Peaches" up here.

Almost as serious as the whole "wallet episode" we lost internet last night. Now, that doesn't seem like a big deal to most. It is, though, my one link with the outside world. It keeps me in touch with all the people I know and love. It allows me to communicate with the southern world that understands me and my accent. It allows to read and keep up-to-date with the world outside of PBS Sprout and Nick Jr. It is how I find the parks and activities that keep us sane. Here in Minnesota, it is my lifeline. The problem, we discovered, wasn't the Internet itself...but our laptop is on the brink. I had to love it and speak tenderly to it just to get it turned on this morning. Our laptop is old. It is older than Maddie. It has moved twice. Once was a really long move. It is time for it go to a better place for laptops....but not until we can afford another one.

On another note, please be in prayer for my Uncle Ned. He is my mom's last living "original" family member. Her father passed away before I was born and her mother (my Nanny) passed away a few years ago. Uncle Ned had surgery last Friday that went well. Then, he developed blood clots in both lungs and pneumonia. He is also going to be a grandfather for the first time and to twins in 7 weeks. He really needs to the Lord's touch.

I am going to go while the laptop still loves me so I can find yet another activity for us on yet another day in the Twin Cities.

Minnesota Blues....

Note: This post is going to contain a lot of "belly aching" (sometimes only a good ol' southern expression will do). Please don't feel like you are required to read on if you don't want to listen to me belly ache.

Top 10 reasons why I want to go home:

1. I miss my friends and family. I miss adult conversation during the day. I miss having other moms to hang around with. I know the kids miss their friends and are tired of having only each other to play with.

2. The stinky weather here. This morning, the sun was shinning (well, I guess it still is) it looked like a WONDERFUL day. I took the kids to playtime at the "Chan" Lifetime so that we would be there to go to the water park after I worked out. It wasn't until I had showered, changed, changed 2 kids (one with swim diapers) and slathered sunscreen on everyone that we realized the wind was blowing really really really hard. It was so chilly because of the wind. The kids were only able to stay in the water for about an hour before they were blue. The water is heated, but unfortunately you do have to come out of it once in a while. How in the world can it be so cold again after it actually hit 80 yesterday? We had to come home and put on jeans. BBBRRRR!!!!

3. Our small "cave" we are living in. I know that I should be thankful that we have a place to stay while the house in GA sells. I know that I should be so grateful that we are able to stay together as a family (although at this moment...staying in GA with kids till the house sold doesn't seem like it would have been so bad). But, I am not. The kids are tired of being on top of each other and not having room to play. They miss their beds, poor Maddie just misses having a room. I miss my bed and my things. I miss my vacuum cleaner. The one here only has the carpet part. Therefore, I have to sweep the kitchen and bathroom floors junk onto the carpet and then vacuum. However, the vacuum is very particular about what it will and will not pick up. I miss my pots and pans....I miss having an oven that works. Don't worry, it will only be about week and 1/2 before they have the parts here and are able to fix ours. So we don't have a stove top or an oven to cook with. Of course my slow cooker and good ol' George Foreman Grill are tucked save away in GA.

4. People always commenting on my southern accent. Yes, I realize that I must sound like I am from a different planet here, but really people.....must everyone have me repeat words so they can hear me say them again. If one more persons tells me that I sound so "cute" I may just scream. Really, really I am a mother of two...there isn't anything "cute" about me and surely to goodness my accent isn't. Have they listened to their speech lately??? We actually had a little boy come to our table at Applebees (where we took Wade for lunch for Father's Day) and stare at us listening to us talk. His parents just let him stand and stare. According to Wade he was more staring at me, but you get the point.

5. 4 way stops. Usually I have no problem with 4 way stops. In the south, people are polite and take turns going through them. Here it is every man (or woman with kids) for themselves. It doesn't matter that the person on my left just went. No, no no the person behind them will go too or the person on my right and then back to the person on my left. And I thought nothing could require you to be more of an aggressive driver than living outside ATL.

6. EVERYTHING closes early. By early I mean 8 or 8:30. Therefore if I need to run errands I can't wait for Wade to get home anymore, I have to take my two munchkins with me. Those of you with kids know how troublesome it can be having to haul kids with you to the store.

7. The fact that stays light until 10ish and gets light again at around 5ish. Of course our spacious home isn't equipped with black out shades like in GA. So, the kids have black trash bags taped to their windows and Wade and I just have to suffer.

8. I have to take an elevator everywhere. Even if I want to check my mail...down the elevator one must go. So you have to wait for the elevator, wait while people get on and off while keeping your kids from getting off at the wrong stop, and haul everything from you car up the elevator (i.e groceries). I realize that people in places like NYC and Boston do this all the time. I, however, am used to just being able to pull up to my garage and boom...there I am at my house.

9. Having to take the garbage down the hall to the garbage chute. Trust me, we go through a ton of garbage in this family. Especially since this place only came with 4 plates. We have to use a lot of paper products. I just can't keep up with keeping the dishes clean. We can't just take one bag out the door until trash day and then pull the can out to the end of the driveway....no, no no every time 1 bag gets full we have to carry it to the very opposite end of the hallway.

If you are wondering where number 10 is, there isn't one after all. You see God looked down on me today and saw that I needed good encouraging news...any kind of good news. And I received some. I had a message from St. Andrew's Preschool (where Maddie is going) and Sam got into the PMO (parent's morning out) program for Fridays. He was on the waiting list and someone dropped out. That means I will have 2 1/2 hours without kids to grocery shop with once a week. That also means that he will have buddies and be with kids his age. Thank you Lord!! I count all my blessings...no matter how small they may seem.

Thank you to those of you that hung on with me to the end of my rant. I try to remain positive, especially for the kids sake. But sometimes, I have had all I can take and just need to get things off my chest. Maybe someone reading this will see that God is real and that He listens to even the smallest of prayers (like mine for Sam to get into the illusive PMO). This rant reminds that only I can make my own happiness. No matter what is going on in life, it is I and only I that look for the good, trust in the Lord, and find happiness. I try to live by that mantra, but sometimes I get caught up in the moment and I forget. Tomorrow is another day, another post, and another chance to make my own happiness...isn't that a blessing in itself!!

Happy Father's Day.....

We hope that everyone had a great Father's Day. As with everything here in Minnesota, Father's Day has been an adventure. So, back by popular demand...our adventures..

Father's Day Adventure 1: "Dancin' the night away"

Wade and I rented a movie last night and settled down to watch it. About twenty minutes into the movie....the power went out. Not only did the power go out, the wind was horrible. I have never witnessed trees that were that limber. Maybe the trees here take some special yoga classes (everyone here goes to yoga...that is the reason I don't....could you only imagine the fool I would make of myself). Or, maybe I have never lived above the treetops and thus aren't familiar with how far they can actually bend. Either way, it was truly amazing (and scary) to watch. The power stayed off for hours (until 4:00am to be exact). Apparently power outages don't dampen parties. Our neighbors below seemed to thrive on the fact that the power was out and they had battery operated "boom boxes". Lucky us...we could have danced the night away. Don't worry, Wade's Father's Day rest was disrupted by the music. He slept soundly through it and all the other gazillion storms that came through. However, his sleep was disrupted this morning which leads us too.....

Father's Day Adventure 2: And Good Morning To You Too....

My darlin' boy decided to get up at 6am this morning. His sleep deprived mother convinced him to stay in his bed a whopping 15 more minutes. I made him his breakfast of "milky" and "snack" (don't worry, I don't actually give my son snack for breakfast) Fruit Loops. Then, like a good mother, I found an educational show on TV (this morning it was Super Why) and curled up beside him to snooze while he ate. This lasted through a couple of shows this morning, to be honest. Till I heard the infamous words, "Uh-Oh". I cracked my eye and looked at Sam. He was holding his nose, his left nostril to be exact. "Uh-Oh" was soon followed by "up nose". Now that got my attention. "Sam, what is up your nose?" I questioned. "Nack (snack)", was his reply. At this point he started to cry. Like the calm and collected mom everyone knows that I am, I flipped Sam upside down in my lap. Lo and behold in his nose was part of a green Fruit Loop. I tried to pull it out, but the flailing of arms prevented that. I snatched up Sam and proceeded to bust into the bedroom. Wade was awoken by the chaos of my quickly (my mom claims I talk too fast in normal situation, I can't imagine what I sound like when I am upset) explaining what happened and Sam saying "Hellow Daddy". By the time Wade suggested tweezers the Fruit Loop had been sucked into the dark abyss of the nostril. Luckily, after a call to my dad again (I called him on Saturday night to check the weather channel for us in case of tornado activity) we were reassured that it had either gone into his throat or dissolved in his nose. Thank goodness for dissoluble cereal so we didn't have to take a trip to the ER this early in our Minnesota stay.

We hope that everyone was able to have an adventure, or at least reminisce about adventures with their Dad today.

We love and miss you all!!!!!

We Made it 2 Weeks!!!

So, we celebrated by taking the kids to the Mall of America. We went to the Nick Jr. amusement park there. Maddie and Sam both got to ride 3 rides. They chose to ride the Diego bus first and then the Hot Air Balloon Race. Sam then rode on Azul the Train (surprise, surprise) and Maddie rode the Dora Ferris Wheel with Mommy. Of course no trip to MOA would be complete without a stop at Legoland where the kids can build with Legos.

Hope you enjoy the slideshow!!!

We Maybe Land Locked................

But, we still find ways to enjoy the water!!! I would have never thought to take my kids swimming in upper 60 degrees weather. Then again, I have never taken my kids swimming in Minnesota until lately! The water was heated, but air was cool. We took the kids to the "water park" at the LifeTime Fitness in "Chan" (Chanhassen). Sam was unsure at first, but in the end everyone had a great time!!

Even Daddy got in the water!!

Maddie climbing up to go down the water slide.

Look at Maddie swimming by herself!! (with the aid of her vest...but don't tell her I'm the one that told!!)

Maddie is very proud of her swimming!

Sam preferred to sit on the side and pour water at first.

Then, he found the fountain!!

And he LOVED it!! (notice the drool strings..my new camera picks up on everything)

"Hey daddy, want to race Sissy?"

Daddy and Sam, take your mark....GO!

Sissy, take your mark...GO!

And, they're off
